Dark Times for United?
I'm a huge Manchester United fan and this article by John Leicester of the Associated Press, brings out the fears that I've been feeling for quite some time. This season has been a huge disappointment and the continuing downward struggle I've been noticing, in particularly the FA Cup disaster makes me think of Leeds United's fall from Footballing grace. I may be jumping the gun as to say Man U will be relegated, but a Cup drought doesn't look too unlikely. Check out the article and let me know your thoughts. Will United recover or has the high price of winning and keeping up with the spending power of their rivals finally caught up with them? Do you think the Glazers have ruined the club? Is this all paranoia?

Some Arab will buy the club and make everything alright.
ReplyDeleteI think this talk of doom for Man U will blow over. It may be a few years of poor form, but they'll bouce back. Relegation will certainly not happen, they've got far too much money and talent for that.
ReplyDeleteEven if they sold Rooney, they could take their pick of many world class players. Manchester is the most popular club in the world and that alone would be enough to lure many players, simply for the recognition your name would receive.
Personally, it's more fun to support a club when they're going through a bit of a drought. Sure we have to suffer through some crap performances, but at least we are reminded that nothing is guaranteed in the football world.
In the mid nineties, I suffered through watching Man U lose out in the quarter and semifinals of the Champions league for two or three years. It made the Treble of 99 all the sweeter.
I also made a prior comment to the current poor form possibly giving chances to homegrown talent that lies with the clubs youth systems. I'm hungry for another crop to come up. Scholes, Giggs, and Neville are only going to remain a few more years and they've been the heart of the reason I've supported United these last 15 years~
I agree with Dave Pierce. I think the article is a lot of hyperbole. I remember feeling this way about the club after we lost Andy Cole & Dwight Yorke off the Treble winning team. We had a few tough years and lost David Beckham, but Ronaldo eventually got going (not in year 1 mind you)and we were kings of England and eventually Europe again. To win championships is tough and it does take some luck/blessings. My biggest issue is that we went after Berbetov, I can't stand the guy. We might as well bring back Ruud.
ReplyDeleteThey'll make a comeback.
ReplyDeleteI agree so much with DP. Although, I know why ODB asked the question. The way united has been playing reminds me of the 2004-05 season and man was that a nightmare of a season. I am also afraid of the debt we have... Well, no where near as afrad as what Real Madrid is looking at. I swear football is going to far with it's spending! I just want to see clubs develop their young talent and watch them turn into stars. I miss those days and Loved how Giggs, Scholes, the Neville brothers, Beckham and Nicky Butts all came up from the youth system and dominated. The only person I think actually gives their youth time to play and develop is Arsene Wenger, but that could be because of his inability to spend due to their stadium being an A$$ load of money.
ReplyDeleteYou thrive on adversity. The more it happens the better it is for us. We have probably been written off at some stage every season and this year is going to be no different. We just have to prove people wrong again. There is no disaster yet. I wouldn’t say we were bullish. But we are a point behind Chelsea, which is not a bad position even though we have played a game more. We are also in the last 16 of the Champions League and have that important Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City. Okay, we had the disappointment of Leeds but every side has one of those every now and then. The fact is we are still in the hunt for three major trophies. Hopefully we can win at least one.
