The Arsenal School of Diving

In the wake of Eduardo's infamous dive, Emmanuel Eboue felt the need to get in on the diving action. The above pic is courtesy of Republik of Mancunia. If you haven't seen the now famous dive that Eduardo pulled off to get the penalty against Celtic midweek, then I've got it below for your enjoyment. I've then posted Arsene Wenger's response saying that Eduardo was indeed fouled and that there's been a witch hunt for Eduardo. Well, I'll just present you with the evidence and you can come to your own conclusion on what Wenger's teaching the Gunners.

Fit But You Know It by The Streets

Seeing Sterlinho's post about the up coming Game with Fame event featuring Megan Fox got me thinking about music in video games. I certainly feel that FIFA does a great job of putting together an eclectic mix of music from all over the world. But I think the one song that has struck me the most is Fit But You Know It by The Streets. The song was so unique in sound and content that it really stood out. According to Wiki, the song is about Rachel Stevens of S Club 7, who used to date former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein. The video also has a cameo of the stars of The Football Factory.

Sterlinho on SoundersFC.com

I alluded to it in a previous post, but I spent Sunday in the sand on Alki Beach for the first annual Sounders FC Soccer Beach Blast presented by Super Supplements. The team I was playing for, Ginger Squidge, won the tournament. The sand was really tough to play in and it also cancelled out skill. The team we played in the final really packed it in defensively and just hustled. They weren't really soccer players, which is why I felt confident going into penalty kicks. Check out the video to see more action and an interview with me.

The girls from Doyle's were good. They ran everybody. I was glad that I didn't have to play them. I also chatted with Taylor Graham for a while and he's a really cool guy. Rookies Evan Brown and Mike Fucito were also there to present trophies to the winners.

Yanks in Europe

Adrian Healey and Janusz Michallik discuss the early season playing time of a couple of European based Yanks.

Last Tuesday Part 2

After going to the Sounders FC Bone Marrow drive, I had to head down to Starfire to get the paperwork for my team in the Beach Blast 3v3 tournament. In a surprise to all of us, the 3 Amigos showed up to welcome us and sign autographs.

The 3 Amigos, Alonso, Montero and Hurtado.

Getting my scarf signed by the 3 Amigos.

I happened to notice that Leo Gonzalez, the Sounders new Costa Rican left back was still hanging out at Starfire.

Obviously I had the guy sign my scarf. I ended up with 12 signatures in one day, and the realization that I really need to learn Spanish.

You Can Save A Life

Last Tuesday the Sounders held a bone marrow drive at the urging of Tyrone Marshall. The effort was to support RSL and Jamaican international, Andy Williams and his wife Marcia. She has been battling leukemia and this was Seattle's chance to help find a bone marrow donor for her. The first stop was checking in and getting paperwork.

Station 2 was filling out a lot of paperwork since you are on the donor list until you're 60 years old.

Zakuani and Riley filling out the donor applications.

After swabbing the inside of your mouth with some really long Q-tips, you moved on to station 4...autographs with the Sounders. The first hour and a half had Marshall, Le Toux, Vagenas, Graham and Jaqua.

Taylor Graham told me that halfway through the event new players were coming. So naturally I stuck around and came back at the midway point. On my way back in I ran into Steve Zakuani outside. We briefly chatted and went on in.

Since I had already completed the donor process I was able to head straight to the autograph table. I want to give a shout out to Marshall and Le Toux for sticking around the whole time. James Riley signing my scarf.

As Zach Scott signed my scarf, I told him about our buddy, Ty, and his, "I used to play with that guy. He's a good player" comments. We had a good laugh about it and we both realized that we had played against each other in a semi-pro indoor league.

Defender and California native, Tyson Wahl.

The first ever Superdraft pick for the Sounders, Steve Zakuani.

Summertime by Another Level

It's Monday and I see that the summer months are coming to an end. I'm a bit bummed about it, so I thought I would drop a summer song for ya. The group is Britain's Another Level, who went Platinum in the Nineties. It also features TQ. I used to bump to TQ's Westside back in the day, so this is kind of nostalgic. According to White Kix, one of the guys was a footballer in his early days. I will let him drop some knowledge in the comments section or I'll update the post when he tells me the story. So this goes out to White Kix...and I'm sorry Oh Danny Boy.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa

Cooper strikes again in loss.

Great start for KC33, to bad his 1860 Munich couldn't keep the momentum. Well, at least our Yank is doing well.

Man City on the move again.

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of veteran Brazilian left-back Sylvinho on a free transfer for a one-year contract. City also reached an agreement for Everton defender Joleon Lescott. The move is subject to the player agreeing on personal terms and passing a medical. At one spectrum you have City spending (with the exception of Sylvinho) an obscene amount of money and showing their intentions with their results, but we also have Arsenal flying out the gate with only one signing this summer. What's the right reciepe for success? Buying for trophies or finding the right kind of young talent and developing them in a system that is first class. I'm trying to not be so judgemental as if City and Real Madrid were my team, I would be completely on board with the spending. Since I am not, I am fighting the fact that I am not to pleased with the spending. Let me know your thoughts. Spend spend spend or spend a little and develop your youth?

No Bueno

Finally... How long could this guy of possibly kept his job. Good thing he quit.

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP)—New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio resigned Friday and was replaced for the rest of the season by assistant coach Richie Williams.

Less than a year after playing for the Major League Soccer championship, the Red Bulls have the worst record in the league at 2-16-4.

The Red Bulls said a search for a new head coach would begin immediately.

“It has been a difficult season for Juan Carlos and he felt that it was in the best interest of the team to step aside,” Red Bulls managing director Erik Stover said. “I want to personally thank Juan Carlos for his efforts with the Red Bulls organization. It was under his leadership last season that the team won the Western Conference Championship and reached the MLS Cup Final for the first time in franchise history. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Osorio apologized to Red Bulls fans for the team’s play this season.

“I want to thank the players for their hard work,” Osorio said. “I would also like to thank the club for the opportunity to coach the team for the past two seasons.”

Williams, 39, takes over as interim head coach for the second time in his four-year coaching career with the team. He also served as the Red Bulls interim head coach from June 27-Aug. 12, 2006, taking over for Mo Johnston and going 4-3-2 over that stretch.

Osorio joined the Red Bulls as head coach on Dec. 18, 2007. In his two seasons, he led the team to a 12-27-13 record and an appearance in the 2008 MLS Cup Final.

New York was one of the original MLS franchises, with the team originally called the New York/Jersey MetroStars when they took the field in 1996. Since its inception, the team has struggled to retain coaches.

Eddie Firmani was the original coach and he was replaced that first season by Carlos Queiroz. Carlos Alberto Parreira coached the following year and Alfonso Mondelo ran the team for part of 1998 before being replaced by Bora Milutinovic, who finished the ’98 season and coached in 1999.

Octavio Zambrano and Bob Bradley followed with three-year stints. Mo Johnston coached for about 1 1/2 years with Williams taking over before Bruce Arena was hired to finish the ’06 season and 2007. He was replaced by Osorio.

Friday Roundup

There's a lot going on today and I haven't done a good job of keeping everybody updated. So we're going to just blow through some stories that I find interesting.

First off, Juan Carlos Osorio has resigned as the head coach of MLS's worst team.

Steven Goff has a look at the U.S. coaching salaries. I think anything over minimum wage is paying Bob Bradley too much.

The New York Times sat down for a little Q&A with Gooch.

Staying in the Big Apple, rumors have surfaced that Barcelona are interested in purchasing the Red Bulls.

There are reports out of France that Landon Donovan maybe heading to PSG.

The Houston Dynamo have signed their first Designated Player, Luis Angel Landin of Cruz Azul. Don't be surprised to see him in orange as soon as Sunday in the Dynamo's clash against the Sounders.

To add further intrigue, Freddie Ljungberg may now suit up for the Sounders as he has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. The Sounders are a different team with him on the field.

A ton of new FIFA Soccer 10 screenshots have dropped on the German site Video Games Zone.

Poor Attitude Lescott Dropped.

LONDON, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Everton have dropped England defender Joleon Lescott from the squad for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Sigma Olomouc, disappointed manager David Moyes said on Wednesday.
The decision appears to have brought Lescott’s departure to Premier League rivals Manchester City closer even though two approaches for the player have been rejected.
Moyes told a news conference the 27-year-old was not in his plans for the first-leg playoff tie at home to the Czech side because he was disappointed by his attitude following Saturday’s 6-1 home defeat by Arsenal on the opening day of the season.
Lescott handed in a transfer request after two attempts by City to sign him were rejected by Everton before the match.
City manager Mark Hughes, appearing at a news conference after his side’s 1-0 win over Barcelona at the Nou Camp later on Wednesday, was reluctant to comment.
“At the moment he’s an Everton player and we fully respect that,” he said. “There’s nothing more to add at the moment.”
Everton said on their website (www.evertonfc.com) Lescott did not train with the first team on Wednesday.
Moyes added: “I’m not including Joleon Lescott in the squad. His attitude in the past few days has been poor and for that reason I won’t include him”.
“I’ve always thought he was a good lad. But I think he has not only let himself down but his team mates too.”
Lescott’s omission means Joseph Yobo is the only fit and available senior central defender in the squad.
Phil Neville and Jack Rodwell played in central defence in pre-season games against Coventry City, Blackpool and Malaga.
Lescott has played seven times for England and was an unused substitute in last week’s friendly international against the Netherlands in Amsterdam which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Lescott signed for the Merseyside club from Wolverhampton Wanderers for five million pounds ($8.23 million) in 2006.

New Castle United sells Duff to Fulham.

I still don't know how I feel about this. If Duff can regain his form from his first season at Chelsea, this could be great. IF, he can stay healthy. Also, how will this effect Dempsey? Let me know your thoughts.
LONDON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Fulham have signed Newcastle United’s Ireland winger Damien Duff on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League club said on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old, who cost about four million pounds ($6.57 million) according to British media, is the latest high-profile player to leave Newcastle after they were relegated from the Premier League in May.
Forward Michael Owen has moved from St James Park to Manchester United while defenders Habib Beye and Sebastien Bassong have joined Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.
“I am happy my move to Fulham has been completed and look forward to joining in with the rest of the squad’s training programme immediately in preparation for two important home matches this week,” Duff told www.fulhamfc.com.
“Fulham had a fantastic season last year and I know having spoken to the manager (Roy Hodgson) in recent days the club’s ambitions are high and I’m looking forward to the challenges.”
Duff, who has 75 caps, made his name at Blackburn Rovers after his debut in 1997 before a 17 million pounds move to Chelsea in 2003—a record at the time for the west London club.
However, injuries disrupted his time at Chelsea and he joined Newcastle in 2006.
“I have known Damien for over a decade since he broke into the first team at Blackburn when I was manager, so I’m fully aware of his qualities and I am looking forward to working with him again,” Fulham boss Roy Hodgson said.

Good win for the Crew, but this is Puerto Rico who has a knack for coming out when their backs are against the wall. So hopefully Columbus can put it away when they face each other again in Puerto Rico on 10/20. Lastly, if this game is supposed to be important, because it's a champions league game, you would think there would be more fans coming out. Was this game played in Dallas??

A Chance For You To Help

Marcia Williams, wife of Real Salt Lake midfielder, Andy Williams has been battling a rare form of Leukemia. Since being diagnosed on July 3rd, 2008, many people have stepped up to help the Williams family and now you can too. Sounders FC have partnered with fellow Jamaican international, Tyrone Marshall to host a bone marrow drive in honor of Marcia. The event will take place tomorrow, August 18th at Qwest Field Plaza adjacent to the Pro Shop. The drive will run from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Click here for the specifics. If you aren't in the Seattle area, you can go to DKMS or Soccer Unites Utah to learn how you can help. If you live in the Puget Sound but can't make it tomorrow then click here.

FIFA Soccer 10 Update

As the release date for FIFA Soccer 10 gets closer we're seeing more screenshots and videos from the game. Set to drop on October 20th, I'm already seeing things that need to be fixed. Like in the picture above, The Sounders are clearly the home team based on the rave green banners in the stadium, yet that doesn't look at all like Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field. How tough is it to import Qwest Field from the boys at Madden and then just cover the upper bowl with tarps? Well, at least Freddie Ljungberg is wearing Pumas...but who's the guy behind Blanco?

As far as game play goes, the team at EA are pumping up the 360 Degree dribbling. There has been a lot of buzz about it so you can see an official response here from EA on their forums.

The video below has the French PSM3 Magazine getting their hands on some gameplay. You may want to watch it in HQ and enlarge the video.

Sounders Regain form in LA

CARSON, Calif. (AP)—David Beckham was ejected for a studs-up challenge in the 17th minute, and the Los Angeles Galaxy finished with nine men in a 2-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night.
Beckham slid into Sounders midfielder Peter Vagenas trying to reach a ball, hooking his right ankle and bringing the former Galaxy midfielder down to the pitch. Referee Ricardo Salazar immediately issued the red card, and Beckham did not offer much of an argument before leaving the field.
It was Beckham’s first red card in his MLS career and his second ejection in the MLS. The red card carries an automatic suspension that will force Beckham to miss Los Angeles’ match at Chicago on Wednesday night.
Seattle (8-5-8), which snapped a three-match winless streak, needed only five minutes to convert following Beckham’s exit. Steve Zakuani scored in the 22nd minute on a 5-yard shot off Brad Evans’ cross from the right side of the penalty area, ending a 336-minute scoreless streak for the Sounders.
Evans began the play by intercepting Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter’s header and dribbling unmarked down the flank.
Fredy Montero added his 10th goal in the 54th minute. Nate Jaqua headed Vagenas’ corner kick to Montero, who fired a 6-yard shot into the upper-right corner of the net.
Sounders FC finished with 10 men after Tyrone Marshall received his second yellow card in the 78th minute. Salazar then ejected Los Angeles’ Eddie Lewis on a straight red card in the same minute, leaving the Galaxy with nine players.
Landon Donovan, diagnosed with the H1N1 virus Thursday, entered the game at the start of the second half for the Galaxy (7-4-10), who had their six-match unbeaten streak stopped.
Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller made three saves for his seventh shutout.
Fans overwhelmingly cheered Beckham when he was introduced in the starting lineup. One homemade banner behind the south goal read, “Welcome Back Beckham.”
The L.A. Riot Squad, the group of fans that displayed anti-Beckham banners when the Galaxy played A.C. Milan on July 19, unveiled none and did not boo Beckham as a unit.

Wow, I didn't see that coming!

In a year where most people were saying that Arsenal would drop out of the big four, Wenger's boys responded with an emphatic win at Goodison Park. The game isn't even over yet and the scoreline is 5-0 (Eduardo scored to make it 6 as I'm writing this). Cesc Fabregas scored two goals in the second half to close the door on any type of come back that David Moyes had planned. Early on I was unimpressed with the play of Jo and surprised by the space that the Everton defense were giving the Gunners. Poor marking on two free kicks led to goals by William Gallas and former Ajax player Thomas Vermaelen. American goalkeeper, Tim Howard couldn't do much to stop the goals in the first half but the second goal by Fabregas went through the legs of the former MetroStar in an embarrassing loss. Here is the complete Gamecast.

Update: Luis Saha scored in added time to get the consolation goal to reward the Everton faithful. Man, that stadium was empty when he scored. Here's my theory on the game: David Moyes decided at halftime to just let Arsenal score at will so that Manchester City would stop their pursuit of Joleon Lescott. That defense looked worse than the 2008 Galaxy defense. Who would want a part of that?

Sounders & Swine

The Sounders and the Galaxy face off this weekend in Carson, CA in a huge game for two teams going in opposite directions. The Galaxy are on a tear, winning five of their last six while the Sounders have been struggling and haven't scored a goal in over a month, since July 11th to be exact. But the Sounders may get some help this weekend thanks to Landon Donovan contracting Swine Flu. In fact, he got it before he went to Mexico with the national team. Weird, huh? Catching the disease before you go to the epicenter? All of this will make for an interesting match up this weekend for two teams looking to take a full 3 points. Here are some other factors going in to Saturday night.

- Sounders will be without All Star defender, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado (yellow card accumulation). Taylor Graham has been activated from the IR list so we'll see who starts between Ianni, Wahl, Scott and Graham.

- FW Edson Buddle (R foot sprain); FW Alecko Eskandarian (nose contusion); MF Dema Kovalenko (L calf contusion); GK Donovan Ricketts (hip pointer)are all listed as questionable for the game.

- Peter Vagenas returns to the HDC to face his former team. Is there any possibility that the Sounders leave him down there? Oh, you mean the Galaxy are thankful that the Sounders took his worthless game and overinflated salary? Well, maybe the Goats will take him.

- With out doing serious research, this seems to be the first time that David and Freddie have faced off in a club game since 2003. A rivalry dating back to 1998.

Here is the official Game Guide.

Freddie vs Becks, LA vs Seattle, Calvin Klein vs Armani

I know I know, but this was the only picture I could find of the two going at it, so if you find a better one let me know. Plus, this is probably the biggest high profile MLS game this weekend, so I want to know... who do you think will win? What's the score line? Which DP do you think is going to ball it up? Most importantly, Which player has the better feeling underwear?

R.I.P Les Paul (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009)

The Father of Rock-n-Roll has left us, but his memory will live on not only through his guitars, but through everytime we hear Led Zeppelin, G&R, The Beatles and many more classic and mondern rock groups. Not only did he invent the sound for Rock-n-Roll, but he invented over-dubbing, delay effects, phasing effect and Multitrack Recording. This guy was just a master of music. Even if you aren't into Rock-n-Roll, you have to respect his geneious and what he did for music. All I have to say is thank you Les, thank you for what you did and what you continue to do even though you are gone, you will always inspire musicians of every kind. Rest in Peace.

Now It's On!

I've been very complimentary about DC United's most recent marketing campaign to try and put some butts in the seats for the US Open Cup final. But I'm done. The newest post on Behind The Badge brings it to a personal level. So screw you and your 12 trophies United. I hope no one shows up at RFK to see you lose to the Sounders.

P.S. - The Sounders do have 4 Championships. 2 from the A-League years and 2 from the USL-1 years.

And here's one more picture of your epic DP fail!

The We Win Trophies Tour

DC United have now kicked their Open Cup marketing into overdrive. First they launched their website and drove people there with stickers. Then the President of United, Kevin Payne, issued a challenge to the people of DC, while newspaper ads were also all over the place. They even made pics for your Facebook and Twitter profiles. Now they are having a 12 stop trophy tour. That's right, one stop for each of their trophies. I guess they spent a lot of money on their bid and they need to recoup it... or else they need a good showing and another trophy to get a stadium deal done.

10 Minutes

Ten more minutes was all the U.S. had to do to hold on to a draw and a vital point against Mexico in Azteca. Unfortunately the loss sees the U.S. slip into third place in qualifying. So in honor of the ten minutes, I give you a ten minute highlight.

Is it just me or was Dempsey non-existent today except for one cross to Davies (or Davis if you're Marcelo Balboa)? I expect more out of a FIFA Bronze Ball winner.
