Onyewu Stretchered Off With Knee Injury

WASHINGTON (AP)—U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu tore a tendon in his left knee during Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica, an injury that usually requires a recovery time of three-to-four months.

The AC Milan defender fell down on the slick turf of RFK Stadium during the 83rd minute of the 2-2 draw and left the field on a stretcher.

Because the U.S. had used its three substitutes, he could not be replaced. Still, the United States gained the draw when Jonathan Bornstein headed in a corner kick in the fifth minute of stopped time.

Onyewu was diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon.

A 6-foot-4 defender from Olney, Md., Onyewu left Belgium’s Standard Liege after last season and signed a three-year contract in July with AC Milan.

The 27-year-old has appeared in just one of the club’s 10 competitive matches this season, making his official debut as a 60th-minute substitute in the 1-0 Champions League loss to Zurich on Sept. 30.

Friday Roundup

There's a lot going on today and I haven't done a good job of keeping everybody updated. So we're going to just blow through some stories that I find interesting.

First off, Juan Carlos Osorio has resigned as the head coach of MLS's worst team.

Steven Goff has a look at the U.S. coaching salaries. I think anything over minimum wage is paying Bob Bradley too much.

The New York Times sat down for a little Q&A with Gooch.

Staying in the Big Apple, rumors have surfaced that Barcelona are interested in purchasing the Red Bulls.

There are reports out of France that Landon Donovan maybe heading to PSG.

The Houston Dynamo have signed their first Designated Player, Luis Angel Landin of Cruz Azul. Don't be surprised to see him in orange as soon as Sunday in the Dynamo's clash against the Sounders.

To add further intrigue, Freddie Ljungberg may now suit up for the Sounders as he has been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. The Sounders are a different team with him on the field.

A ton of new FIFA Soccer 10 screenshots have dropped on the German site Video Games Zone.

Pele to Genoa?

Hidden among the transfer activity of CR9 and Oguchi Onyewu, I noticed that Pele had transferred from Portsmouth to Genoa. Which got me thinking, "why didn't I know that Pele was still playing" and "when did he come out of retirement?" Well, if you clicked on the link you will see that we have yet another youngster bitin' the name of a legend (Yes, I'm talking to you, Cristiano). So this little move got me thinking about the other transfers that you may not have heard as much about.

Marcus Hahnemann to Wolverhampton Wanderers
The Seattle native left Reading on a free transfer after 8 years with the club. He started with them when they were in the second division and was part of their great run to the Premier League. He signed a one year contract with the Wolves.

David Edgar to Burnley
Not to be confused with The Dreaded Goggled Gladiator™, Edgar Davids, this 22 year old Canadian defender left Newcastle in search of first team football in the Premiership. His old man played one game for the Barcodes before he landed with the NY Cosmos.

Dean Windass to Darlington
I've always admired the guy for two things. 1) Willing to keep his last name, and 2) playing until he dies of old age. The 40 year old striker has no plans to retire and scored in the Premier league at a ripe old age of 39. In true movie script fashion, the hometown boy from Hull scored the 2008 goal to propel Hull City to the Premiership for the first time in club history.

Paul Heckingbottom to Mansfield Town
- All I can say is...could you imagine a 3v3 team with him, Windass and Shittu? I would love to hear John Motson call that game.

And one last note, it's now official, Obertan is a Red Devil.

Gooch to AC Milan

United States defender Oguchi Onyewu has joined AC Milan on a three-year contract the club said Tuesday, becoming the first American to join Serie A in more than 10 years.
Milan acquired Onyewu from Standard Liege in Belgium after some outstanding performances in the United States’ run to the Confederations Cup final. The U.S. lost 3-2 to Brazil in the final.
Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed. Onyewu also holds a Belgian passport and he will likely be registered by Milan as an EU player.
The last American to play in Serie A was Alexi Lalas, who played for Padova from 1994-96.
The 27-year-old Onyewu was born in Washington D.C. after his parents emigrated to the United States from Nigeria and helped Standard Liege to two consecutive Belgian league titles.
