Shocker in San Salvador, El Salvador 2 Mexico 1

Eliseo Quintanilla scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to lift El Salvador to a critical 2-1 victory over Mexico on Saturday in a World Cup qualifier.

The result gives El Salvador some hope of reaching next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa, while plunging Mexico into a deeper hole.

Julio Martinez gave El Salvador the lead in the 11th minute, but Mexico’s veteran striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco equalized with a penalty in the 71st.

With the top three teams to qualify for the World Cup and four of their ten games played, El Salvador moved up to third place with five points, one point ahead of Honduras and two ahead of Mexico, which is still struggling for form despite new coach Javier Aguirre being hired in April to replace fired Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Costa Rica leads the qualifying group with 12 points followed by the Untied States at 10.

  1. I don't even know how to react to this! Disbelief, amazed, confused? What ever it is, it's probably what every Mexican is feeling right now times infinity. What is going on south of the border?!!

  2. What ever it is it's great! Mexican's are so arrogant, always thinking they are the best footballing nation in CONCACAF. I for one will be happy to not see them go to South Africa. What a blow to their ego's. At least USA knows how to pick themselves up after a loss. Speaking if we lost... That would've guaranteed BB getting fired, Dang! Do we take the win, or lose and get a better coach. I'm glad we won... but Bobby is still around.

  5. OH CANADA! That's all I got. One day we shall see Canada up there too, but not at the expense of the US. Sorry man, I'm a Yank through and through. Patriotism runs deep.

  7. It would be cool to see T&T go again, but I don't think that's happening.
